Health Insurance
Our health insurance provider is GM Southwest.
For insurance information and claim forms, visit the GM Southwest website.
Please note: there was a misprint in the printed brochure, the annual deductible for the student plan is $500.
USHS has no infirmary beds and covers the cost of emergency room visits only after regular office hours and only in the event of illness, not accidental injury. Therefore, it is essential that students have adequate health insurance to cover the cost of hospitalization and hospital expenses due to illness or accidental injury.
VCU sponsors a hospitalization insurance program for students, their spouses, and their dependents. The insurance plan, administered by GM Southwest, offers hospitalization and major medical benefits. Although participation is voluntary, students are strongly urged to enroll or to seek alternate health insurance coverage. Unexpected hospital expenses can interrupt or terminate a student's academic career.
Applications for the student insurance plan are mailed to students before registration in the summer. Annual renewal is not automatic; students must file a new application each year.
For the 2007-2008 academic year, the student-only coverage plan has an annual premium of $1,762, an annual $500 deductible, and a basic maximum benefit of $100,000 per year. Or you may select a basic maximum benefit of $250,000 for an annual premium of $1,839. Students over age 40 pay somewhat higher premiums. Other coverage options such as student and spouse or family are available as well.
