Aetna Student Health Insurance
Aetna provides plans for individual students as well as options for family/spouse coverage. Although participation in the university sponsored health insurance plan is voluntary, students are strongly urged to enroll or to seek alternate health insurance coverage. Unexpected hospital expenses can interrupt or terminate a student's academic career.
VCU Student Health Services has no infirmary beds and does not cover the cost of emergency room visits, x-rays, medications or hospitalizations. Therefore, it is essential that students have adequate health insurance to cover the rising cost of health care. An option to enroll in Student Health Insurance with automated monthly payments is available.
Dental Insurance is not available with this particular plan.
If specific questions are not addressed at the Aetna Student Health Insurance website or by Aetna Customer Service, please feel free to contact VCU's Student Health Insurance contact, Karen Beebe at kbeebe@vcu.edu or 827-1855.
Department Paid Student Health Insurance Premiums
If Student Health Insurance will be provided by your department, please do not attempt to enroll online. Enrollment for your Student Health Insurance will be handled by one of your departmental administrators directly with an Aetna representative. If the enrollment process is not complete by the first date of coverage listed, coverage will backdate to the first date of coverage as noted. Should medical treatment be needed prior to receipt of identification cards, students should ensure that they are seen by an Aetna provider and that all receipts and bills are saved for filing with Aetna upon first opportunity once fully enrolled.
If you are a departmental administrator that provides Student Health Insurance for several of your students and you have not heard directly from Aetna regarding the Group Enrollment process or expected invoicing, please contact Karen Beebe at kbeebe@vcu.edu immediately.
Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)
This group is the administrative liaison between the student community and USHS. The members include staff, faculty and student representatives from both campuses. Members meet periodically to discuss issues related to student health.
