Career Counseling and Advising
The University Career Advising at Virginia Commonwealth University provides individual career counseling and advising.
Advising
Individual Career Advising is recommended for those times when you need specialized, individual assistance with basic job search issues. For further individual career advising assistance, schedule an appointment with a career coordinator assigned to your major/department to discuss issues specific to your career and/or job search.
Counseling
Career Counseling is recommended for students who are struggling with career choice and/or planning issues and feel they would work best individually with a career coordinator. To take advantage of this, schedule an appointment with a career coordinator assigned to your major/department.
If you are struggling with career planning issues, you may want to take advantage of the career counseling services available to you in the UCC. Issues appropriate for this service include
- making career choices (career, major, occupation, industry, etc.)
- learning more about your career interests, skills and values
- talking about how your career affects your life and vice versa.
During the career counseling process at the UCC you will meet with a career coordinator and talk about the things impacting your career issues. You may take some career inventories (career assessment instruments) to help you learn more about yourself in relationship to careers. There may be times when you answer a lot of questions and times when you talk about all sorts of things that affect your career and life. Most likely, you will need to do some "homework" outside the counseling sessions to obtain more information about careers that you are considering. The career coordinator is there to help you process all this and put it together into a meaningful plan.
Career Counseling is available by appointment only. Contact the UCC career coordinator assigned to your major/department to schedule an appointment.
